Groundbreaking Composer Tan Dun to Lead Macao Orchestra, Hanggai and International Musicians at The Venetian Macao

Combining classical and rock, Tan Dun “Rock Symphony” New Year's Concert comes to The Venetian Theatre on Dec. 28

(Macao, Dec. 23, 2016) – World-renowned composer and conductor Tan Dun will present a thrilling and innovative programme when he leads the Macao Orchestra, outstanding Mongolian folk-rock band Hanggai and celebrated international musicians during a concert at The Venetian® Macao’s Venetian Theatre on Dec. 28, 2016. Tickets for Tan Dun “Rock Symphony” New Year's Concert go on sale NOW at all Cotai Ticketing box offices.

One of the world’s most revered composers and conductors, Tan has won dozens of awards, including a Grammy and an Oscar for his score for the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” His music has been performed worldwide by famous virtuosos and leading orchestras, at opera houses, international festivals, and on the radio and television.

Tan wrote the award ceremony music for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and conducted the Shanghai Disneyland Opening Concert, which reached a record-breaking global audience. He has made an indelible mark on the world's music scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical music, multimedia performance and Eastern and Western traditions.

His new concert at The Venetian Macao will see the participation of the respected Macao Orchestra, a professional ensemble under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, which has been called one of the best symphony orchestras in Asia. Regularly collaborating with internationally renowned musicians, conductors and ensembles, the orchestra has performed in more than 30 cities in mainland China and around the world.

Also appearing are four renowned musicians including violinist Jue Yao from Hong Kong, cellist Zhu Lin from Shanghai, pianist Ralph van Raat from Holland and soprano Maria-Chiara Chizzoni from Italy. Completed by Mongolian folk-rock legends Hanggai – considered a Chinese representative of world music – the programme will combine established classical pieces, Hanggai original compositions and Tan’s own works, some of which require audience participation through the use of mobile phones.

One of these is “Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds”, which incorporates recordings of bird song interpreted on Chinese traditional instruments triggered by the smartphones of the musicians and audience members. The piece honours both mankind’s ancient desire to communicate with nature and optimism for the future.

Meanwhile the equally interactive “Long Li Ge Long: A Symphonic Poem with Mobiles and Audience Chant” sees attendees humming and using their cell phones to help create the music.
