Three Sands China Academy programmes offer career development paths
(Macao, Dec. 14, 2016) – Sands China Ltd. honoured local university students Dec. 8 for completing the Integrated Resort Internship Programme, with a graduation ceremony at the Adelson Advanced Education Center at The Venetian® Macao celebrating their achievement. Shortlisted as a “Best Intern,” 13 students were presented with a special token of recognition by Sands China department heads for their exceptional performance.
As one of the many career development opportunities designed for local university students, the Integrated Resort Internship Programme offers participants short-term work experiences in Sands China’s properties for a period of up to six months. Coming from four local and six overseas universities, the students completed their internships in 12 non-gaming departments, including concierge, food and beverage, corporate communications and information technology, where they gained valuable integrated resort work experience.
In recent years, Sands China has introduced a variety of integrated resort career development initiatives exclusively for local university students, including the Career Experience Opportunities Programme and the Fast Track Supervisor Programme. Through these innovative programmes, the company offers participants the chance to pave their career paths in the integrated resort industry, nurturing them step-by-step toward successful future careers as integrated resort professionals.
“These programmes are one-of-a-kind in Macao, and they are all initiatives of the Sands China Academy – a platform that is dedicated to the career development of both Sands China team members and local Macao talent, including people who are not directly employed by Sands China,” said Antonio Ramirez, senior vice president of human resources for Sands China Ltd. “Our integrated resort career programmes offer local university students an abundance of opportunities to experience working in non-gaming areas in some of Macao’s leading integrated resorts, with the ultimate aim of developing local talent into future integrated resort professionals.”
Aside from a Certificate of Completion, each graduating intern received a hand-written card with comments and words of encouragement from his or her department head. The ceremony also saw two of the interns from different Sands China integrated resort career programmes share their experiences on receiving professional training and working at Sands China. As a token of appreciation, the company presented each with a limited-edition collection of 10 hotel key cards featuring the eight brands of Sands China’s integrated resorts.
The graduating interns were also given the opportunity to join a networking and communication platform offered by Sands China, which provides career advice and updated industry news through various Sands China career forums.
Since its inception, Sands China has offered more than 4,800 local university students various opportunities to gain valuable integrated resort work experience, including part-time and flex-time employment, internships and the like. For instance, the Career Experience Opportunities Programme, which is especially designed for local university students, offers a wide diversity of on-the-job training and continued learning opportunities at Sands China’s integrated resorts. Receiving comprehensive professional on-the-job training like full-time employees but on a flex-time basis, the participants can give adequate focus to their university studies while they practice applying what they learn in the classroom to real-world integrated resort operations – gaining more valuable hands-on work experience prior to graduation, paving the way for successful careers as integrated resort professionals.
To further foster the development of professional talent in the wider Macao community, the company launched the Fast Track Supervisor Programme in June at the Integrated Resort Career Exhibition Exclusively for University Students. First-of-its-kind in Macao, this intensive programme is dedicated to training exceptional local graduates to reach supervisory-level positions within four to 12 months, all with the aim of developing locals into professionals in non-gaming areas such as hotel and housekeeping in order to meet the increasing demand for such talent in Macao.
Sands China has long been collaborating with local universities in hopes of further nurturing local talent into future integrated resort professionals. In 2016, more than 120 students benefitted from the the three aforementioned Sands China Academy initiatives, with a steady increase in the number of students looking for opportunities to experience working at Sands China’s integrated resorts. To date, more than 300 students have already registered to participate in 2017 Sands China integrated resort internship programmes and a total of 110 students will begin their internships in the first half of 2017.
Sands China Ltd. values developing a well-trained workforce as a way of supporting Macao’s growth as a world centre of tourism and leisure. The various Sands China Academy programmes contribute to the push for non-gaming diversification in Macao, and are examples of Sands China’s commitment to developing local integrated resort talent.
