Sands China Announces New Creative Arts Competition

Encourages artists to explore Macao’s past and present

(Macao, Aug 23, 2016) – Sands China Ltd. is launching a new creative arts competition in support of Macao’s art and cultural industries.

Organised by Sands China Ltd., the Sands China Presents: Macao’s Past & Present Creative Arts Competition was announced at a press conference Tuesday at The Venetian® Macao. The competition is co-organised by the Macau Artist Society, the Macao Multimedia Photographic Association, and the Macao Designers Association, with the Cultural Affairs Bureau (ICM) and the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) as supporting entities.

The competition is part of Sands China’s initiatives to promote the local art scene and support the Macao government’s call to develop industrial diversification. It seeks to raise public awareness and understanding of Macao’s world heritage sites and its historic centre, to boost Macao’s cultural tourism, and to contribute to the city’s transformation into a world centre of tourism and leisure.

Members of the public are being encouraged to create compelling and elegant art pieces that demonstrate the unique local charm of Macao’s past and present. Entries can be submitted in artistic and creative forms such as painting, photography and sculpture, and artists are encouraged to approach their pieces with an open, innovative and experimental spirit.

Guests attending Tuesday’s press conference included Lok Hei, vice president of the Macau Artist Society; Lou Kam Ieng, president of the Macao Multimedia Photographic Association; Dirco Fong, vice president of the Macao Designers Association; Dr. Wilfred Wong, President of Sands China Ltd.; Kou Chon Fong, acting division head of the Macao Museum of Art and the Division of Visual Art, MSAR Cultural Affairs Bureau; and Grace Chen, head of the advertising and production division of the Macao Government Tourism Office.

Dr. Wilfred Wong said: “Sands China remains committed to the diversification of Macao, and to the raising up of the city’s cultural and creative industries. We hope this competition inspires Macao’s talented artists to create heartfelt homages to our unique city, and encourages Macao residents to enjoy its beauty.”

Entries will be reviewed by a jury panel of noted artists and professionals from Macao and overseas. Categories are drawing and painting, photography, and sculpture/3D arts. Winners will be chosen in each category, including a special award in each category for entries themed on The Parisian Macao, Sands China’s newest integrated resort, which opens Sept. 13. Winners will receive valuable prizes totalling over MOP 150,000 and an invitation to an award ceremony, with winning works to be displayed across all Sands China properties.

The competition hopes to attract Macao’s arts enthusiasts to submit art pieces that may eventually turn into commercial products for Sands China, with an aim of diversifying the artists’ design presentation and increasing their exposure in the market – part of Sands China’s corporate social responsibility initiative of supporting local companies and entrepreneurs.

The competition’s theme aims to encourage Macao residents to pay more attention to Macao’s cultural legacy and to appreciate its beauty and unique cultural value. Works must be closely related to the people, events and things of Macao, and should capture the changes over time in the city’s development and residents’ lives, reflecting the grandeur of the city. Subjects could include Macao’s World Heritage Sites, innovative architecture, integrated resorts, folk customs, festival celebrations, and large-scale events. Works may also explore lesser-known streets and alleys, as well as the everyday life of local residents, in order to showcase the local characteristics and social dimensions of Macao.
