Sands China Care Ambassadors spend meaningful day with members of the Macau Special Olympics
(Macao, August 22, 2016) – Around 30 Sands China Care Ambassadors (SCCA) spent a meaningful day with Macau Special Olympics (MSO) athletes and families Sunday, as part of the Macau Youth Volunteer Association’s One Day Volunteer 2016 programme.
Sands China’s continuous participation in volunteer activities demonstrates the company’s dedication to fostering harmony, respect for differences and acceptance of people with disabilities in the local community.
Around 40 MSO athletes and family members joined the Care Ambassadors at Po’s Kung Fu Feast Character Breakfast with the DreamWorks All-Stars at Sands® Cotai Central Sunday morning, where they had fun interacting with DreamWorks characters like Madagascar’s Alex the lion and Po from Kung Fu Panda while enjoying a buffet breakfast together. They then headed to the MSO office, where the Care Ambassadors played games with MSO members and learned more about connecting meaningfully with the mentally handicapped.
“This is my fifth year doing One Day Volunteer with Sands China,” said one of the participating SCCA volunteers. “Every year is rewarding, and I always come away from it feeling like I get so much more out of it than I put in. Interacting with groups like the Macau Special Olympics is very meaningful, and I’m looking forward to next year’s activity.”
The One Day Volunteer programme is coordinated by the Macau Youth Volunteer Association, which was established by a group of local volunteers in 1993. It is a non-profit volunteer group that aims to promote the spirit of volunteering, serve the community, fulfil one’s potential and broaden one’s horizons. The One Day Volunteer event was initiated in 2000, and aims to encourage the general public to utilise every opportunity presented to them to serve others in need. Aside from providing an enriching experience, it also encourages participants to engage more in volunteer services via this gateway.
Sunday’s activities marked the company’s eighth year of participation in the annual One Day Volunteer programme. Sands China Care Ambassadors have been taking part in One Day Volunteer since 2009, having taken it in turn to serve the elderly, the physically and mentally disabled, and those with hearing impairment by accompanying them on activities such as a visit to Ice World, a tour of Coloane and Taipa, learning sign language, drawing, and hosting a singing contest.
