Sands China and MGTO Launch Celebrity Mentor Programme for Retail Professionals

Workshop series promotes the advancement of Macao’s retail sector

(Macao, Oct. 15, 2018) – Sands China Ltd. and the Macao Government Tourism Office kicked-off a Celebrity Mentor programme Thursday for the employees of retail outlets at Sands Shoppes – the company’s four interconnected malls comprising more than 850 retailers.

Co-organised by MGTO and Sands China, the new training programme invites celebrity mentors to conduct customer service workshops for retail professionals. The series of workshops gives retail employees a chance to learn from experts in their respective fields, better equipping them to provide the best shopping experience for visitors to Sands China’s properties – which attracted 92 million visits in 2017.

Celebrity Mentor is exclusive to the Sands Retail Academy, an initiative aimed at continually advancing the service quality of the retail industry in Macao. Launched in 2013, it offers complimentary customer service training to the retail professionals at Sands Shoppes – made up of Shoppes at Four Seasons, Shoppes at Venetian, Shoppes at Cotai Central, and Shoppes at Parisian.

“The Sands Retail Academy and MGTO share a common objective of supporting the development of Macao’s retail professionals, and we have cooperated to create this Celebrity Mentor workshop series in a joint effort to help achieve that objective,” said Grant Chum, chief of staff for Sands China Ltd. “The retail sector is key to the success of Macao’s tourism industry, and retail employees play an important role in providing quality service to visitors as Macao continues its development as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

At the occasion, Deputy Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office Ricky Hoi Io Meng expressed his pleasure in MGTO launching the workshop series with the Sands Retail Academy. He stated that visitor surveys in Macao have for years shown that spending on shopping has continued to account for a dominant share of 40-50 per cent of visitor expenditures. According to Hoi, the persisting phenomenon encourages local retailers to place greater focus on enriching and optimising visitors’ shopping experiences, which will in turn consolidate the image of Macao as a tourist destination.

Four workshops have been planned for Celebrity Mentor, with topics that include brand development, communication skills, sales techniques and consumer behaviour. The first workshop in the series was conducted by Hong Kong actress and UK-accredited trainer Astrid Chan Thursday at The Venetian Macao’s Adelson Advanced Education Centre, following a kick-off ceremony for the programme. Chan has been actively involved in corporate and impression management training since 2013 and conducted her session on the topic of personal branding.

The workshop series targets to train around 100 participants in each workshop, for a total of 400 participants trained overall. The next workshop will be presented by motivational speaker and mentor Brian Cha on the topic of sales skills.

The Sands Retail Academy is the result of a collaborative effort between Sands Retail and Sands China’s human resources department. It is one of the initiatives of the broader Sands China Academy, which is focused on the career development of both Sands China team members and local Macao talent, like those employed by Sands China’s retail partners.

The work of the Sands Retail Academy helps its participants offer outstanding customer service and increases their skills to help further develop their careers. The academy is part of Sands China’s long-term commitment to developing local talent in Macao by nurturing locals who are not direct employees of Sands China. Over the past five years, it has delivered approximately 30,000 training hours for more than 8,000 frontline employees of Sands Shoppes retailers to date.
