Sands China Donates MOP 1 Million in Scholarship and Fellowship Funds

Donations to six tertiary institutions to benefit 100 local students

(Macao, Oct. 04, 2018) – For the 12th straight year, Sands China Ltd. has made a donation to six Macao tertiary institutions for scholarships and fellowships. The MOP 1 million dollar in total donations was presented to representatives of the educational institutions at a cheque presentation ceremony in September at Sands China’s company office.

The annual donation reiterated the company’s support of local students, in acknowledgement of the importance of higher education in nurturing Macao’s talent.

“Sands China remains firm in its conviction that investing in local talent development is crucial for our team members and for Macao as a whole – both now and for the future development of the city,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “It’s our company’s privilege to help nurture Macao’s local talent in cooperation with educational institutions. Through the successes of these students, Macao’s future in development and diversification as a world centre of tourism and leisure will be in good hands.”

Wen Hongyan, senior vice president of human resources for Sands China Ltd., said: “When Sands China is able to help these students with these donations, we are investing in the future of Macao. The development of local talent means the continued development of Macao. Including today’s donation, Sands China has contributed nearly MOP 10 million toward scholarships and fellowships since 2006, with nearly 1,200 students benefitting to date.”

Sands China presented the scholarship and fellowship cheques to (in no particular order) Ms. Carol Wong, director of the Rector’s Office of the University of Macau; Denys Kwong Ying Wa, associate vice president, and Remus Wong Ka Weng, head of the Student Affairs Office, from the Macau University of Science and Technology; Linda Lei, head of the Academic Affairs Department of the Macao Polytechnic Institute; Antonio Chu Chan Weng, head of the Technical and Academic Support Division of the Institute for Tourism Studies; Prof. Alvaro Barbosa, vice-rector, and Teresa Loong, director of the Office for Student Affairs, from the University of Saint Joseph; and Dr. Cheng Hing Wan, acting associate vice president of the Macau Institute of Management.

The MOP 1 million in donations are to be distributed among 100 students in support of their studies for the current academic year. Beneficiary students are chosen based on their academic performance and financial status during the previous academic year.
