Sands China Team Members Take the Clean Plate Challenge

(Macao, June 14, 2018) – Sands China Ltd. team members completed the Clean Plate Challenge June 5-7, in support of the U.N.’s World Environment Day. Held annually on June 5, World Environment Day encourages global awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

The three-day activity challenged team members at the company’s staff dining rooms to take only what they would eat and turn in a clean plate. An initiative of the Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy, the Clean Plate Challenge has the goal of increasing team members’ awareness of living green and minimising food waste.

For this year’s event, team members completed the Clean Plate Challenge a total of over 65,000 times. Team members serving as Clean Plate Ambassadors were on hand to note any food waste, paying attention to the different types of waste in order to make future improvements to the effort.

“I don’t usually think about food waste on a daily basis, so this was a good reminder for me to look at how much food I’m grabbing,” said one of the participating team members. “Even though I’m just one person – when you think about how many team members we have – it really makes a big impact if we’re all careful about how much we waste.”

Sands China’s senior vice president of resort operations and development, Mark McWhinnie, said: “At our company, we try to approach environmental sustainability from as many angles as possible, so that we can minimise our carbon footprint. Being a large operation, the success of each measure is significantly multiplied due to our massive scale. Initiatives like the Clean Plate Challenge not only support worthwhile endeavours like World Environment Day, but also significantly contribute to increasing the effectiveness and reach of Sands ECO360.”

Sands China’s participation in World Environment Day is one of the many ongoing efforts of the Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy, which utilises measures like energy saving, resource recycling, conservation and community engagement. Sands ECO360 is designed to help minimise the company’s environmental impact and lead the way in sustainable building development and resort operations.

Sands China’s support of World Environment Day also included an eco-conscious nature walk in Coloane June 3, where team members from the Sands Cares Ambassador volunteer programme cleaned up debris along the Long Chao Kok Coastal Trail.
