Sands China Teams Getting Ready for 2018 Dragon Boat Races

(Macao, June 5, 2018) – Sands China Ltd. team members participated in a dragon boat benediction ceremony June 1 at Nam Van Lake Nautical Centre, an annual tradition ahead of each year’s Macao International Dragon Boat Races.

Sands China teams have competed in the dragon boat races every year since 2005. Rowers spend their spare time in intensive training sessions, building a strong sense of teamwork in the process.

This year’s races begin June 16, with Sands China sending a total of 46 team members organised into four teams: two standard dragon boat teams and two small dragon boat teams, in both open and women’s categories.

“Sands China always looks forward to seeing our team members race each year,” said Wen Hongyan, senior vice president of human resources for Sands China Ltd. “The dragon boat races are an important cultural tradition in Macao; it’s an event that is both fun for our team members, and helps strengthen bonds of unity and fellowship in a friendly international competition. As in years past, we’re very pleased again this year to see male and female team members representing the company, and we wish them the best of luck.”

The benediction ceremony was attended by Wen and several of the company’s heads of department, who offered their encouragement and support to the dragon boat team members. They burned incense with the rowers to attract blessings, carved a roast suckling pig, and dotted the dragon boats’ eyes to symbolically awaken the spirit of the boats. They also set off firecrackers and gave red packets to the dragon boat team members for good luck in the upcoming races.
