Sands China Participates in Earth Hour 2018 and Holds In-House Climate Week

(Macao, March 29, 2018) – Sands China Ltd. recently drew additional attention to environmental sustainability and climate change with two March initiatives – participation in Earth Hour 2018 and the hosting of an in-house Climate Week at Sands China properties.

The integrated resort operator joined businesses and individuals around the world in observing Earth Hour on Saturday, March 24 – marking 10 straight years of turning off lights at its properties in support of the global event. Starting at 8:30 p.m., all Sands China properties – Sands® Macao; The Venetian® Macao; The Plaza® Macao featuring Four Seasons; Sands® Cotai Central featuring St. Regis, Conrad, Sheraton, and Holiday Inn; and The Parisian Macao – turned off their exterior lights and non-essential indoor lights for one hour.

Started in 2007, Earth Hour has a goal of raising awareness of climate change by encouraging eco-conscious individuals, communities, households and businesses to switch off their lights for one hour.

Sands China’s observance of Earth Hour was complemented by its own in-house Climate Week, which was held March 20-27 at employee back-of-house areas of Sands China properties. Climate Week encouraged team members to act on addressing climate change and was highlighted by an Energy Saving Roadshow. The roadshow invited team members to replace their homes’ incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs for ultra energy-efficient LEDs, in order to save energy and to support the goals of Earth Hour and the Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy. Team members were able to bring in lightbulbs from their homes to turn in for recycling and buy discounted energy-efficient products like LED bulbs to replace them. More than 4,000 energy-saving lighting products were sold during Climate Week.

“It’s always a pleasure for Sands China to support Earth Hour each year and we’re glad to have hosted our own in-house Climate Week for the second year in a row,” said Mark McWhinnie, senior vice president of resort operations and development for Sands China Ltd. “Environmental sustainability continues to be a crucial global concern, and our company is proud to operate in a manner that’s responsible toward the environment, guided by our corporate Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy.”

Examples of Sands ECO360 in action include Sands China’s ongoing efforts on electricity conservation. Energy-saving LED lights and the optimization of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems saved a total of 21 million kWh of electricity in 2017 – enough to power more than 50,000 households for one month.

These and other initiatives continue to help Sands China maintain environmentally sustainable operations, earning the company recognition for its efforts. This includes a 2017 PATA Gold Award in the Environment – Corporate Environmental Programme category, and six hotels at Sands China properties holding the Macao SAR government’s Macau Green Hotel Gold Award.

Sands China’s environmental efforts are part of Sands Cares, the global corporate citizenship programme of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.
