Local University and Graduates Students at Sands China’s Internship and Career Programmes in 2017

Sands China’s internship and career programmes allow local university students and graduates to be mentored by experienced professionals, gain professional skills and knowledge and accumulate work experience in integrated resorts, building a solid foundation for their future career development.

(Macao, Jan. 24, 2018) – The year 2017 was full of career development opportunities from Sands China for local university students and graduates in Macao, with more opportunities awaiting in 2018.

Close to 200 students graduated from Sands China’s Integrated Resort Internship Programme in 2017, with 20 per cent of them taking full-time positions with the company upon graduation or by participating in its Fast Track Supervisor Programme, or choosing to join its Career Experience Opportunities Programme (CEOP).

Integrated Resort Internship Programme

Sands China’s Integrated Resort Internship Programme gives local university students opportunities to work full-time at its properties on a short-term basis while fulfilling a portion of their degree requirements. As a result, they are able to gain a diversified mix of valuable work experience through Sands China’s successful integrated resort model – an exposure that is uncommon to find in a traditional hotel business model. The programme offers full-time internship opportunities in 15 non-gaming departments including concierge, food and beverage, corporate communications, information technology, and others. The two newest departments to participate in the programme are facilities management and props design, which were added in 2017 in order to offer even more diverse career training options for students. In 2018, the programme will offer internship opportunities to 200 students.

Career Experience Opportunities Programme (CEOP)

The CEOP gives local university students the advantage of gaining comprehensive and professional on-the-job training on a long-term yet flex-time basis. This allows them to give adequate focus to their university studies while they practice applying what they learn in the classroom to real-world integrated resort operations. Based on the number of training hours accumulated and their work performance, participants may be offered supervisory trainee positions upon graduation. With professional knowledge and skills acquired through the CEOP, participants are more capable of adapting to the dynamic business operations of integrated resorts and more prepared for beginning their careers at Sands China. Currently, a total of 20 university students are taking part in the programme.

Fast Track Supervisor Programme

The intensive Fast Track Supervisor Programme trains exceptional local university graduates to work full-time in non-gaming departments, with a goal of having them reach supervisory-level positions within four to 12 months, depending on their area of work. Since the launch of the programme in June 2016, a total of 19 participants have become supervisors, working in various departments including housekeeping, front office, concierge and Paiza rooms. An additional 16 participants currently in the programme are expected to become supervisors in 2018.

Sands China aims to include more non-gaming departments in these programmes, and plans to launch additional programmes to nurture more local talent in the hospitality industry, providing a steady flow of integrated resort professionals to the Macao community.

Since 2015, Sands China has introduced a variety of talent development initiatives exclusively for local university students and graduates, including the three aforementioned programmes. Initiatives like these allow university students and graduates to be mentored by experienced professionals and learn about the latest trends in the local and international tourism industry. While accumulating work experience in integrated resorts, participants gain professional skills and knowledge to build a solid foundation for their future career development. Outstanding students are given priority to join Sands China upon graduation from these internship and career programmes.

As Macao’s largest integrated resort developer, Sands China believes that nurturing local talent is one of the most important ways to help facilitate social and economic development in Macao, and to contribute to Macao’s transformation into a world centre of tourism and leisure. In line with the direction set by the Macao SAR government, the company has been working closely with universities and other tertiary educational institutions in Macao to explore ways to accelerate the cultivation of local talent, establishing a long-term relationship with educational institutions and students.
