It’s a real shame when people go to Hong Kong, but don’t come to Macau. It’s an even bigger shame when they come to Macau without staying a night in one of its luxurious hotels.

If you have some money to spare, then I recommend choosing the Venetian Macao.

The Venetian Macao is more than a resort – it’s one of Macau’s most famous landmarks. It stands as the centerpiece of the Cotai Strip, the strip of reclaimed land between Taipa and Coloane islands. Considering its reputation, it’s not surprising that its hotel and shopping center are constantly packed with tourists. To avoid the crowds, I highly recommend staying there overnight and going out when most of the visitors have gone home.

When I arrived at the hotel, I had a little incident that I would like to share. My friend went to the bathroom before we checked in, so I stood alone in the lobby waiting. I was really tired after my trip, and -- spotting the thick, soft carpeting under my feet -- I decided to sit down on it. A few minutes later, a hotel employee approached me and said that sitting on the carpet was not permitted in the lobby. My gut reaction was that he was discriminating against me – don’t foreigners often sit down on the floor? But, after thinking about it further, I realized that this is a five-star hotel, and so it must have strict rules regarding guest conduct. It’s a pity, though -- that carpet was REALLY soft!

The Venetian occasionally features special themes, such as tundra or jungle. The hotel’s interior is decorated according to the theme, and sometimes it even has special events or shows. During my first visit here, the theme was “Venetian Culture”. The exterior of the hotel was lit up to look like ancient Italian tapestries, transforming its outward appearance. I was very impressed by this, to say the least. The second time I visited, I noticed that the hotel was decorated with a dinosaur theme, and had free events for children.

With the help of my friend, we booked a special hotel package that included two ferry tickets, two buffets, HKD300 worth of shopping vouchers, and some free show tickets. The total price was only RMB1600 – significantly cheaper than if we had bought each part separately. This price included off-season rates, and it probably would have been more expensive if we had you booked during a busier time of year.

The entire hotel interior seemed to give off a golden glow. Even the sinks in my bathroom were golden.

If you’ve ever stayed in a cramped Hong Kong hotel, then you’ll feel like Macau’s hotel rooms are enormous. The basic suite in the Venetian, the Royale suite, is 70 square meters large. Even the bathroom is unbelievably spacious. It includes both a bathtub and a shower. The toilet is in its own separate room, and the sink area has two spouts. Each part of the bathroom is individually impressive, and the as a whole, I was blown away.

The bed was comfortable, and the bedding material was soft. The slippers and bathrobe were both made of high-quality materials as well. All in all, I was very satisfied.

The room was so lovely that I didn’t want to leave it. It was a pity that I had other places to go.

Though the hotel has many restaurants, the one that was included in our package was called Bambu. It was a generous Asian buffet filled with other Chinese tourists (many of them likely bought the same package as us). Since Macau is a seaside city, not only was there abundant seafood at the buffet, it was all fresh!

Lastly, I should mention the free shuttle buses that drive to and from the different hotels in Macau. By riding them, you can easily and cheaply move around the city.
