Spending Money in Macau

Currency and Exchange Rate

Macau has its own currency: the Macau Pataca. This is often abbreviated to “MOP”.

Hong Kong Dollars are also widely by Macau vendors at a 1:1 exchange rate. Many tourists choose to use Hong Kong Dollars, since there is little difference between the values of the two currencies.

As of spring 2017, the exchange rates* between the commonly used currencies in the region are as follows:

1 Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) = 1.03 Macau Patacas (MOP)

1 US Dollar (USD) = 8 Macau Patacas (MOP)

1 British Pound (GBP) = 10.25 Macau Patacas (MOP)

1 Chinese Yuan (CNY) = 1.16 Macau Patacas (MOP)

Currency Exchange
The easiest way to exchange money in Macau is to find a Money Exchange counter at the airport or ferry terminals. You can also use an ATM to directly withdraw cash (usually HKD or MOP). Macau’s large hotels and resorts all have places to exchange money as well. If you have Hong Kong Dollars, then you don’t need to exchange currency, since it is widely used in Macau.
If you enter Macau from the Zhuhai border gate, look for currency exchange shops near the border crossing.

Bank Cards/Credit Cards
China Unionpay bank cards are widely accepted in ATMs in Macau, and can often be used for payment. Other bank cards may work as well, but it is a good idea to check with your bank before traveling. Also, most banks will charge a fee for using a bank card in a foreign country. Some shops in Macau have started using mainland Chinese payment methods, such as Alipay. Other online payment methods, such as Paypal are not available in Macau.

How Much Money Should I Bring
Since every person’s spending habits and budgets are different, it is difficult to say how much money visitors should bring. Hotels in Macau generally cost between HKD600-2000 per night. For meals, expect to pay HKD100-500 per person at resort restaurants, and around HKD80-200 per person at outside restaurants. Macau is full of shopping malls – some are reasonably priced and some are very expensive. It is best to find shopping centers that suit your budget.
