The Grand Canal Shoppes celebrates The Year of the Tiger with a big BANG!

(Macao, February 2, 2010) – With the Chinese New Year just around the corner, The Grand Canal Shoppes is ready to celebrate The Year of the Tiger, with a number of wonderful live entertainment to make the shopping trip an enjoyable and entertaining one for all Macao residents and guests worldwide.

Free Red Packets Give-Away

From now till February 17, 2010, shoppers at The Grand Canal Shoppes may redeem a set of complimentary red packets with a single, original receipt at the San Luca Customer Service Counter upon spending MOP 1,000 or above at any shops on the same day.

Breathtaking Daily Performances

Beginning on February 14, The Grand Canal Shoppes will launch a wide variety of breathtaking daily performances around the mall.

1. Yoyo & Contortion

The Grand Canal Shoppes is proud to bring an internationally acclaimed yoyo and contortion duo, competition awards winner in Monte Carlo and Germany in 2009, to the Chinese New Year celebrations at the mall. The Chinese performers have had shown their extraordinary talent while performing in France, Portugal and Thailand earlier ago.

Traditional Chinese yoyo known as “Kong Zhu” is an exciting act. The performers spin the yoyo and fly it high through the air in a dazzling display. And Chinese contortion has been a popular act for thousands of years, demonstrating remarkable strength and control of the human body.

2. Mask changing

The Chinese art known as “Bian Lian”, or mask changing, is a closely guarded secret of the Sichuan opera, only passed down amongst the male members of families who have mastered the art.

The Grand Canal Shoppes is proud to present the national-class mask changing masters, Master Li and Master Zhou to bring this tradition to life for all guests and everyone would be amazed.

3. Contortion with props

In addition, The Grand Canal Shoppes is proud to invite members of the Beijing National Acrobatic Troupe from Chang Chun for another stunning contortion with props performance during the Chinese New Year.

4. Music diva

A thrilling combination of voice, music, charming appearance, the group of 4 ladies who graduated from professional music school will bring the authentic Chinese music with upbeat rhythms at The Grand Canal Shoppes.

5. Caricature

The fun doesn’t stop here, internationally acclaimed caricaturist Bill Yim will be at The Grand Canal Shoppes to brighten everyone’s day. The guests may be lucky to have their portrait painted by Bill when they visit The Grand Canal Shoppes this Chinese New Year.

6. Lion Dance Performance

The highlight of this Lunar New Year celebration is the traditional lion dance performance on February 19, 2010. All visitors are welcome to join the “Eye Dotting Ceremony” which will be held at St. Mark’s Square at 1:30pm, to mark the beginning of a joyful and prosperous year for all visitors to and from Macao.

During Chinese New Year, God of Fortune will be strolling along The Grand Canal Shoppes and giving Red Packets to all visitors. And The Grand Canal Shoppes has featured a giant peach blossom tree display at Castella Square to celebrate the Lunar New Year season, which is a great place for photo opportunity. According to Chinese traditions, the peach blossom tree is often considered as a symbol of success and prosperity.
