(Macao, April 4, 2013) – Sands China Ltd. and Top Rank held a press conference Thursday morning at The Venetian® Macao, for the upcoming ZOU SHIMING “Fists of Gold” event scheduled for April 6 at 6 pm at the CotaiArena™.
“Zou Shiming’s pro debut as a Top Rank fighter is another shining example of the incredible diversity of world-class entertainment Sands China is known for,” said Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sands China Ltd. “High-profile sporting events like ‘Fists of Gold’ help strengthen Macao’s foothold as a regional entertainment hub and a world centre for tourism and leisure. We’re happy to be working with Bob Arum and Top Rank to bring this must-see sporting event to Macao.”
Joining Tracy and Arum at the press conference were some of the top fighters of the multi-bout event and their coaches, including world-renowned trainer Freddie Roach, who has been preparing Zou for his Saturday night world debut as a pro boxer. The other boxers joining Zou at the press conference were: Eleazar Valenzuela, Zou’s opponent; Brian Viloria, WBO/WBA flyweight champion; Juan Francisco Estrada, Viloria’s challenger; Roman Martinez, WBO junior lightweight champion; and Diego Magdaleno, Martinez’s challenger.
The press conference was also attended by Leon Panoncillo of the China Professional Boxing Organization, the commission overseeing the “Fists of Gold” event; Francisco Valcarcel, President of the World Boxing Organization (WBO); and broadcasting icons Tim Ryan and Larry Merchant, along with two-time world heavyweight champion Big George Foreman, who are calling the action ringside for an HBO2 telecast.
The boxers have all been working hard in preparation for Saturday night’s big event, arriving in Macao last week to continue their training. In addition, Zou and Roach had a chance to meet with local youth boxing students to share their love of the sport and to pass along some of their tips.
China’s top boxer Zou will face off against Mexico’s Eleazar Valenzuela (2-1-1, 1 KO) in the main event of the night. Filipino-American Viloria (32-3-0-2, 19 KOs) will be defending his unified titles in a 12-round bout against Top-10-contender Estrada (22-2, 17 KOs), in one of two world championship matchups leading up to Zou’s debut. A former U.S. Olympian from Hawaii, Viloria enters the fight having won 13 of his last 14 bouts, seven by way of knockout, including his last three world title battles. Estrada, of Mexico, will be making his second title challenge. In the other title bout, Martinez (26-1-2, 16 KOs) defends his title against undefeated No. 1 contender Magdaleno (23-0, 9 KOs).
A special theme song, appropriately titled “Fists of Gold,” has been produced by Hong Kong musician Johnny Yim exclusively for the event, and is performed by Hong Kong singer Stephanie Cheng. The music video can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqGyxCqltdw.
