(Macao,
February 5, 2013) – Five more hotels are
now participating in the Sands China Ltd. initiative to extend Earth Hour to every
month of the year, following the January 17 lights-out by Sands®
Cotai Central’s Conrad Macao.
On Tuesday night at 8:30 pm, The Venetian® Macao;
Four Seasons Hotel Macao; Sheraton Macao Hotel, Cotai Central; Holiday Inn
Macao Cotai Central and Sands® Macao Hotel all joined Conrad Macao, Cotai Central in switching
off their exterior facade and non-essential indoor lighting for an hour. The
ambitious and impactful initiative is part of the ongoing environmental
sustainability efforts of Sands ECO360°, the global green initiative of Sands China’s parent company,
Las Vegas Sands Corp.
“The company is delighted to see this
extended participation in Earth Hour gaining momentum,” said Mark McWhinnie,
Senior Vice President of Operations of The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel and
Sands Cotai Central. “With all six of the hotels on Sands China’s Macao
properties now coming together to conserve additional energy on the first Tuesday of every
month, we hope this example of the Sands
ECO360° programme in action will inspire other Macao hotels to join us in
raising the bar for environmental sustainability in Macao.”
Earth
Hour is an annual global event each March that encourages households and
businesses to turn off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness on
climate change. Conrad Macao had proposed a
friendly challenge to Macao’s hotels and resorts as part of Earth Hour's global
’I Will If You Will’ campaign. It offered to increase its lights-off time to
twice a month if 10 other Macao
hotels will agree to join in the effort once a month.
With an aim to continuously improve the
company’s stewardship of the environment, Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s Sands ECO360°
programme puts practical measures in place at all of its global properties. As
one example, lighting measures at The Venetian Macao saved an estimated 12.9
million kWh in energy consumption in 2011, despite the fact that the property
has grown in size. These types of environmentally sound measures have helped
both The Venetian Macao and Sands Macao earn the Macao SAR government’s coveted
Macao Green Hotel Award.
