(Macao, June 14, 2013) - In support of the Office for the Development of the Energy Sector of the Macao Special Administrative Region's "Macau Energy Saving Week 2013," Sands® Macao, The Venetian® Macao, The Plaza™ Macao and Sands® Cotai Central turned off their non-essential exterior lighting for one hour Monday night, contributing to the awareness of the importance of energy-saving tactics in Macao.
"Sands China has a long-standing policy of implementing environmentally sustainable initiatives at all its properties," said Mark McWhinnie, Senior Vice President of Operations of The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel and Sands Cotai Central. "We have the corporate Sands ECO360° programme in place; we initiated Earth Hour, Every Month in 2013, for which we're happy to say 27 hotels in Macao are currently participating in; and we're constantly improving internal measures targeted at reducing wastage of water, electricity and food, and increasing recycling. We were very happy to participate in 'Macau Energy Saving Week 2013.'"
Following Macau Energy Saving Week 2013, the company will also be promoting a Smart Casual Summer that will extend until the end of August, by encouraging non-operations team members to come to work dressed in smart casual attire. Other measures targeted at involving more Sands China staff to go green include placing promotional materials in the staff areas of all properties, and engaging them to participate in the Energy Saving Bicycle Promotional Activities - an event co-organised by the Office for the Development of the Energy Sector (GDSE) and the Macau Ecological Society.
Sands China actively promotes green efforts through its Sands ECO360° programme, which includes energy-saving options for event organisers to host green meetings (information available at www.venetian.com/Las-Vegas-Meetings/Eco360-EcoMeetings/).
In the area of energy conservation, The Venetian Macao's remarkable energy-saving steps resulted in 14 million kWh in savings by installing 250,000 energy-saving lights in 2011. No less remarkable is a computer programme installed in the chiller plant that allows the plant to work in automatic mode, decreasing chiller energy consumption by 20% per year. This initiative saves around 16 Million kWh per year.
Conrad Macao, Cotai Central initiated a challenge this past January by calling on other hotels in Macao to turn off their non-essential lighting once a month during 2013 as part of Earth Hour's "I Will If You Will" challenge. When 10 hotels stepped up to the challenge, Conrad Macao promptly increased its lights-out policy to twice a month.
Internal measures at Sands China properties continue to increase the number and visibility of recycling stations, reduce water and electricity usage, and minimise food wastage.
