(Macao,
February 4, 2013) – Asone of theannualtraditions of the Sands China Care Ambassadors (SCCA),
45 volunteers spent their time visiting 15 single-living elderly in Macao Sunday, helping clean
their homes before the arrival of the Year of the Snake. The Ambassadors also spread
the joy of the New Year by bringing each household a special gift pack, as a warm
gesture for the upcoming Spring Festival.
This is the fourth consecutive year
the Sands China Care Ambassadors have undertaken the spring cleaning activity. Whether
it is degreasing the kitchen, scrubbing hard-to-reach areas, vacuuming the
floor or taking out the garbage, spring cleaning is a custom for Chinese people
hoping to sweep away any bad luck before the New Year. Sunday’s 45 SCCA
volunteers divided themselves into 15 teams, each going to a different
household to assist in the traditional clean-up activity from 10 am to noon.
The volunteers’ act of service was not limited to cleaning though, as they
expressed their warmth and care for Macao’s
elderly by spending valuable time with them in conversation, and also offered
each household a Chinese New Year gift pack as a token of blessing.
The beneficiaries of Sunday’s visit
are among the live-alone elderly sponsored by Sands China Ltd. to receive
support from the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance Centre, which is funded by the Macao
SAR Social Welfare Bureau and operated by the Macau General Union for Neighborhood
Associations since March 2009. In addition to 24-hour emergency support
service, the centre renders a wide range of social services including emotional
relief, community information and regular visits to single-living elderly,
senior couples and other individuals in need in Macao. This year, Sands China
is donating MOP 240,000 to sponsor 200 live-alone elderly to use a Peng On Tung
Tele-Assistance device for a period of 12 months. Since the company began its sponsorship
of the programme in 2010, its efforts have assisted a total of 611 beneficiaries, with a total
sponsorship to date of MOP 636,000.
“I had a great time helping out
today, and the elderly we visited seemed to enjoy our morning together as much
as we did,” said one of the SCCA volunteers. “Being able to offer this service
during the New Year gives a different feeling to the holiday for me; I’m glad I
was able to take part again this year.”
The Sands China
Care Ambassador Program aims to give Sands China employees an opportunity to serve
the local community by helping to make Macao
a better place to live, while contributing to its development. With a current
membership of 370 volunteers coming together from across all Sands China
properties – The Venetian® Macao, Sands® Macao, The Plaza™
Macao and Sands® Cotai Central – the Sands China Care Ambassadors have
contributed over 2,700 voluntary hours of community service since the programme was founded in August
2009. Sands China Ltd. considers initiatives like this one central to its commitment
towards community outreach and service.
