Joanna Wang will make her Macao
debut alongside local rock band L.A.V.Y. at the CotaiArena on March 15. Wang
gained widespread popularity in the Mandarin music scene soon after releasing
her debut album Start from Here in
January 2008, thanks to her soothing, smoky voice that has drawn comparisons
with multi-Grammy Award-winning singer Norah Jones. The album, featuring hits
like “Let’s Start from Here,” “The Best Mistake I’ve Ever Made,” and “New York
State of Mind,” sold over 200,000 copies across Asia. Founded in 2007, L.A.V.Y.’s
latest album My Lonely Journey brings
their pop rock songwriting talent back to stage.
The following night, on March 16, one of the
greatest Fado singers, Camané, and folk music band Dead Combo, both from Portugal, will
perform on the CotaiArena stage as the closing act of the Macau Literary Festival. The performance of Camané marks
the first time ever the CotaiArena is hosting a singer of Fado – a Portuguese
music genre recently listed on the UNESCO Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage
– highlighting Macao’s unique role as an
important platform between China
and Portuguese-speaking countries. Dubbed “Prince of Fado,” Camané has released
six albums with each of them having sold over one million copies throughout
Europe and Asia. Dead Combo is a guitar and
bass duo well-known for their bewitching psychedelic Latin sound and
fantasy-filled rockabilly aesthetic. Their discography boasts three “Records of
the Year” in Portugal
and their 2008 album Lusitânia Playboys
was even named “Record of the Decade.”
Jointly organised by local Portuguese
newspaper Ponto Final, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau and the Macau
Foundation, The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival
brings together prominent writers, publishers, musicians, filmmakers and
artists, amongst many others, from China
and Portuguese-speaking countries to Macao.
The 2013 programme features conferences, panel discussions, a book fair, art
exhibitions, music concerts and film screenings between March 10 and 16.
