(Macao, July 25, 2013) - Sands China Ltd. and Top Rank held a press conference Thursday at The Venetian® Macao, for the upcoming Fists of Gold II boxing spectacular. The night of non-stop action kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cotai Arena, headlined by China's Zou Shiming and Hong Kong's Rex Tso.
"Sands China has a strategy to bring the best in superstar sporting events to our Cotai Strip Resorts Macao," said Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sands China Ltd. "We want to make Macao the region's top destination for entertainment, as a world centre of tourism and leisure. Diversification is key, and the first Fists of Gold event back in April shows that these high-octane, must-see events bring in visitors from all over the region and the world. International media coverage of these high-profile events helps raise global awareness of Macao as a destination."
"Boxing is catching on in a big way in China," said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. "Zou's pro debut as a Top Rank fighter at April's Fists of Gold was a great success, and we're thrilled to have brought him back to Macao for Fists of Gold II. It's going to be a fantastic night of fighting, and will pave the way for The Venetian Macao's next big showdown, when Pacquiao and Rios battle it out in November."
Joining Tracy and Arum at the press conference were some of the fighters and coaches of Fists of Gold II, including Zou Shiming and his Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach; Jesus Ortega, Zou's opponent; Rex Tso; WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada; Milan Melindo, Estrada's challenger; IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich; Mauricio Muñoz, Gradovich's challenger; and WBO Intercontinental heavyweight title contenders Joe Hanks and Andy Ruiz, Jr. Also attending were broadcasting icons Tim Ryan and Larry Merchant, who along with two-time world heavyweight champion Big George Foreman, will call the action ringside for the international telecast of Fists of Gold II, to be shown on HBO2 and CCTV5.
While preparing for Saturday night's fight, some of the boxers took advantage of opportunities to interact with local community groups while in Macao. Zou spent time with teenagers from the YMCA Monday to share some of his boxing tips, and Melindo and fellow Filipino boxer Genesis Servania met with some members of Macao's Filipino community Wednesday.
Ready to take the ring for his second pro bout, Zou (1-0) will face Mexico's Ortega (3-1, 2 KOs) Saturday night in a six-round flyweight matchup. Known as "The Wonder Kid" to his fans, Hong Kong's Tso (9-0, 6 KOs) will pit his undefeated record against Thailand's Samor (20-4-2, 9 KOs) in super flyweight six-rounder. Mexico's "El Gallo" Estrada (24-2, 18 KOs) will try to defend his WBO/WBA flyweight title against the Philippines' undefeated "El Metodico" Melindo (29-0, 12 KOs) in a 12-round matchup. And Undefeated IBF featherweight champion Gradovich (16-0, 8 KOs) will attempt his first title defence against No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger Muñoz (26-3, 12 KOs) of Argentina in a 12-round battle. Undefeated heavyweights Hanks (21-0, 14 KOs), of Los Angeles, Calif. and Ruiz, Jr. (19-0, 13 KOs), of Mexicali, Mexico, will go 10 rounds for the WBO Intercontinental heavyweight championship.
