(Macao, July 24, 2013) - Around 90 Filipinos working in Macao were given the exclusive opportunity to meet with the Philippines' undefeated boxers Milan "El Metodico" Melindo and Genesis Servania, in a special event organised by The Venetian® Macao in collaboration with Caritas Macau's Overseas Laborer Service unit at the Meng Fai Nursing Home Wednesday evening. The Philippine Consul General to Macau Danilo T. Ibayan; Vice Consul Ira Micheline R. Valdez; and representative from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Ramon Lamberto C. Pastrana were also present at the event. Melindo and Servania are in town getting ready for their Fists of Gold II title fights, to be held Saturday, July 27 at the Cotai Arena.
The boxers received a warm welcome upon arrival at the event as the participants sang the national anthem of the Philippines, "Lupang Hinirang," inviting them to sing along. Melindo and Servania were introduced to Caritas Macau's expatriate services, after which the boxers gave their words of encouragement to their fellow Filipinos, who might miss home and their families back in the Philippines while making a living in Macao. They also briefly shared about their professional boxing careers, giving the roomful of participants inspiration and further encouragement. A question and answer session that followed showed the audience's strong interest in the 25-year-old Melindo, from Manadue, and the 21-year-old Servania, of Cebu City.
The joyful evening did not come to an end until after the participants further showcased their singing talent. Melindo and Servania were invited to join the performance, giving them some fun time ahead of their upcoming title fights.
Caritas Macau's Overseas Laborer Service unit is designed to assist overseas workers to overcome the difficulties they encounter in Macao and to understand their needs. It provides regular Cantonese and Mandarin classes, cultural events, anti-stress activities and seminars on the foreign labour law for its users, helping them enhance their work and language skills.
Featuring the return of two-time Olympic gold medallist Zou Shiming (1-0) and the Macao debut of Hong Kong fan-favourite undefeated Rex Tso (9-0, 6 KOs), the multi-bout Fists of Gold II takes place at the Cotai Arena Saturday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. The night of non-stop action also brings to Macao WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Estrada (24-2, 18 KOs) vs. undefeated mandatory challenger Milan Melindo (29-0, 12 KOs), and undefeated IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (16-0, 8 KOs) vs. Mauricio Muñoz (26-3, 12 KOs).
