(Macao, August 26, 2012) – The Venetian® Macao-Resort-Hotel organised a tree planting activity at the Ka-Ho Reservoir Lakeside Walk Sunday, as part of The Venetian Macao’s celebration of its fifth anniversary this month and the long-term commitment of Sands China Ltd. toward environmental sustainability and a greener Macao. Leong Vai Tak, Vice President of the Macao SAR Government Environmental Consultative Committee; Cheong Sio Kei, Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau; Leong Kun Fong, Administration Committee member of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Gunther Hatt, Executive Vice President of Operations of Venetian Macau Ltd. and Ho Wai Tim, Chairman of the Macau Ecological Society, officiated the opening ceremony. A representative from the “International Million Trees/Forest Project” Hong Kong Regional Committee also attended the event to lend its support. After the opening ceremony, all guests joined hands with 100 Sands China team members to take shovels and plant trees, marking The Venetian Macao’s fifth anniversary by helping the Earth.
“With such a fast pace of development and such large properties, Sands China has always put a huge importance on environmental sustainability. Our efforts are guided by the Sands Eco 360º program. It’s the global green initiative of our parent company, Las Vegas Sands,” Mr. Hatt said. “As we celebrate five great years, we want to put our long-standing commitment to the environment into practice again today, by doing some old-fashioned hard work together – picking up some shovels and planting some trees, to give Mother Nature a helping hand. We will continue to do our best to give back to the unique community that is Macao.”
As part of Sands China’s ongoing commitment in promoting property-wide initiatives toward environmental conservation, a variety of strategies and actions have been rolled out and have achieved success in many ways. Among which, the energy conservation measures at The Venetian Macao contributed to the reduction of its total electricity bill by 13 per cent since opening, corresponding to 39 Million kWh of energy saved per year; and the water saving measures at The Venetian Macao also helped save a total of 342 million litres of water since opening – enough to fill 120 Olympic swimming pools. All these efforts have helped The Venetian Macao earn a Macao Green Hotel – Gold Award in 2011, the highest possible recognition from the Macao government for the resort’s environmental management and commitment to green practices. As The Venetian Macao celebrates its fifth year on the Cotai Strip, the tree planting activity was another solid step from the resort toward building a greener future and a greener Macao.
