Charity Ball at Venetian Carnival to raise money for Macau Ecological Society

(Macao, May 15, 2012) – Sands China Ltd. announced at a press conference Tuesday (May 15) the establishment of the Sands China Green Fund, to be founded and managed by the Macau Ecological Society, using money raised at the upcoming May 26 Venetian Carnival Mardi Gras Costume Charity Ball.

Melina Leong, Vice President of Public Relations and Community Affairs for Venetian Macau Limited said, “With environmental sustainability such an important aspect of our company’s operations, and knowing what a popular event The Venetian Carnival is, the Charity Ball seemed like a perfect opportunity to advance the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts.”

The Sands China Green Fund will have as its goal the promotion of environmental conservation at local schools and will offer scholarships to local students. To raise the money to be donated to the Macau Ecological Society for the fund’s establishment, the charity event will conduct a silent auction and sell colourful Mardi Gras beads, with ten per cent of table sales to be donated as well. To maximise the fundraising potential of the event, Sands China Ltd. is matching dollar-for-dollar all funds raised at the ball.

“The Venetian® Macao has the distinction of being the largest single-structure hotel building in Asia and the seventh largest building in the world in terms of floor area,” remarked Mike Naylor, Vice President of Facilities for Venetian Macau Limited. ”While that creates enormous energy demands, it also gives us equally enormous opportunities for saving energy and protecting the environment. That’s particularly encouraging for us, because our conservation and sustainability efforts have an immediate and measurable effect on the environment.”

The company-wide global sustainability effort of Sands China Ltd. is coordinated and unified by the Sands Eco 360° programme – an initiative of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp. The strategy’s primary objective is to continuously improve the company’s stewardship of the environment. As an example of the policy put into action, Naylor explained how the innovative building design of The Venetian Macao not only minimises the immediate impact associated with construction, but also provides the foundation for the conservation of natural resources throughout the years of operation. In the area of water conservation, the integrated resort utilises special shower heads, water flow controllers and an automatic irrigation system. Those measures combine together to save a total of 342 million litres of water annually – enough to fill 120 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The effectiveness of the integrated resort’s various sustainability efforts was recognised recently with a 2011 Macao Green Hotel – Gold Award, to be presented at a June ceremony by programme organisers the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau and the Macau Government Tourist Office.

Sands China Ltd. is an active participant in Macao’s government and community green initiatives, participating annually in Macao Energy Conservation Week and Earth Hour, while the company’s Green Action Team proactively works on energy and environmental initiatives across all its Macao properties. The Venetian Macao sponsors and supports an annual Macau Solar Boat Challenge, aimed at raising awareness among local students and educators of social and environmental issues, design and engineering science. An educational and community project organised by the University of Saint Joseph, the event invites primary and secondary students to develop solar-powered boats and race them at the outdoor lagoon of The Venetian Macao.
