Girls’ Generation is a nine-member girl group formed in 2007 by
S.M. Entertainment, one of the largest entertainment companies in Asia.
They are also known as “SoShi” or SNSD, both abbreviated forms of their
Korean name. Their 2009 hit single “Gee” holds the record for being the
longest running number one song on KBS Music Bank, having held the
number one chart ranking for nine consecutive weeks. The single was also
named Song of the Decade (2000 – 2009) by the Korean music website
Melon. The group's self-titled debut Japanese album is currently the
highest-selling album by a Korean group in Japan in Oricon (Japanese
music chart) history, being certified Triple Platinum by the Recording
Industry Association of Japan. In January 2012, Girls' Generation
appeared on American late night talk show Late Show with David
Letterman, marking the first time that a Korean musical act performed on
the show. Girls’ Generation received the Daesang Award (Grand Prize) at
the 19th and 20th Seoul Music Awards in 2010 and 2011 respectively,
making them one of four artists in Korean music history to win the title
for two consecutive years. The group was also crowned Artist of the
Year at the 2009 and 2010 Melon Music Awards, another major music award
ceremony in South Korea, and also The Best Female Group at the 2008 and
2010 Annual Korean Entertainment Arts Awards.
U-KISS, stands for “Ubiquitous Korean International (Idol) Super
Star”, is a boy band made up of seven members in 2008. Their biggest
hit was “Bingeul Bingeul” from their 2010 debut album <Only One>.
And in 2011 the group tapped into the Japanese market by releasing the
single “Tick Tack” and subsequently a Japanese full-length album <A
Shared Dream> in 2012. U-KISS was named The Best Male Idol Group in
the 19th Korean Cultural Entertainment Awards in 2011 and received the
Most Potential Overseas Idol Group Award at the 2011 [V] CHINESE TOP
Awards Concert. The group has also made appearances in various TV
reality shows and films in South Korea since 2008.
SHINee, a contemporary R&B boy group formed in 2008 also by
S.M. Entertainment, has already held a successful concert tour and
starred in its own reality show. The five members are considered fashion
icons, having created a “SHINee trend,” and are known for their highly
synchronized and complicated dance moves. The group has released three
albums, including one in Japanese, four mini-albums, one live album and
numerous singles. Their debut single “Replay” has a Japanese version
which was launched in mid-2011. SHINee has won a string of awards
including K-Pop Lovers! Awards 2011: Artist of the Year, and two
Popularity Awards respectively at the 20th Seoul Music Awards and the
25th Golden Disk Awards.
B.A.P, stands for “Best, Absolute, Pefect”, is a six-member hip
hop boy band created in early 2012. One of the members, Bang Yong Guk,
has been a well-known rapper after he featured in “Going Crazy” by Song
Ji-Eun of K-pop girl group Secret, and then “I Remember” with Yang Yo
Seob of K-pop boy group Beast. B.A.P. released their first album
<Warrior> and held an unprecedented sold-out debut show in South
Korea in front of 3,000 fans in January 2012. And just within a week of
their debut, the group was ranked number ten on the Billboard World
Albums Chart for two consecutive weeks.
